FAQs
Ultrasound-Guided Injections â Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ultrasound-guided injection?
What do you inject?
The type of injection depends on your condition. Common options include:
- Corticosteroid (steroid): Reduces inflammation in joints and soft tissues, such as tendons, to ease pain
- Hyaluronic acid: Lubricates and cushions a joint
- Hydrodistension: For frozen shoulder, using saline to gently stretch and free the joint capsule
- High-volume injection: For Achilles tendon pain, using saline to reduce irritation and improve movement
Your clinician will explain the options, how each works, and any potential risks so you can make an informed decision.
Can the scan and injection be on different days?
How long until I feel better?
Steroid injections: Often help within 10 days, with relief lasting 6 weeks to several months
Hyaluronic acid: Can take 1-4 weeks to settle but often lasts longer
Your clinician will advise what is realistic for your condition.
Are injections painful?
How many injections can I have in one joint?
What are the risks and side effects?
Risks are generally low but can include:
- Allergic reaction to medication
- Temporary increase in pain
- Skin lightening or thinning around the site
- Infection (rare)
- Short-term rise in blood sugar (for diabetic patients)
- Soft tissue weakening if steroids are used too often
We take every precaution to minimise risk and discuss any concerns before treatment.

Can I drive after the injection?

What is an ultrasound guided injection?
We use real time ultrasound to see the exact structure causing your pain. This allows us to guide the needle precisely to the right spot. It improves accuracy, reduces risk and often provides quicker relief than injections given without imaging.
What do you inject?
We use different medications depending on your condition. The most common are:
- Corticosteroid (steroid) for joints and soft tissues, such as tendons, to calm inflammation and ease pain
- Hyaluronic acid to help lubricate and cushion a joint
- Hydrodistension for frozen shoulder, using saline to gently stretch and free the joint capsule
- High volume injection for Achilles tendon pain, using saline to reduce irritation around the tendon and improve movement
We will always explain the options, how each treatment works and any potential risks so you can make a confident, informed decision.
Can I split the scan and the injection on different days?
Yes. If you prefer to have time to think things through or to fit around work or family, we can scan and assess you first, then book an injection within two weeks if needed.
How much does each treatment cost?
- One stop service with scan, consultation and injection around ÂŖ280
- Scan and specialist assessment only around ÂŖ150
- Standalone ultrasound guided injection around ÂŖ280
Prices may vary slightly depending on complexity. We can confirm this when booking.
How long until I feel better?
- Steroid injections often start to help within two to seven days. Relief can last from six weeks to several months.
- Hyaluronic acid can take one to four weeks to settle in but often lasts longer.
- Hydrodistension for frozen shoulder usually brings gradual improvement over days to weeks.
Your clinician will explain what is realistic for your condition.
Are injections painful?
Most patients describe a quick pinch or a feeling of pressure. We use local anaesthetic and ultrasound guidance to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
How many injections can I have in one joint?
It depends on your diagnosis and how you respond. As a general guide, many clinicians avoid more than three steroid injections per joint per year, spaced by at least six weeks. Your clinician will advise on what is safest.
What are the risks and side effects?
These are usually low but can include:
- A temporary increase in pain for up to 48 hours
- Skin lightening or thinning around the site
- Infection, which is rare
- A short rise in blood sugar in diabetic patients
- Soft tissue weakening if steroids are used too often
We take every precaution to minimise risk and will discuss any concerns before treatment.
Will I need rest after the injection?
We suggest gentle rest for 24 to 48 hours. After that you can return to normal activities as it feels comfortable and follow any rehabilitation advice given.
Do you do spinal injections or spinal scans?
No. We focus on joints, tendons and soft tissues of the arms and legs. If you need spinal care we can help direct you to the right service.
How soon can I repeat an injection if needed?
If symptoms return, we usually wait at least six weeks before considering another injection. This gives the first treatment time to work and protects the tissues.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with us.
We are also happy to accept referrals from physiotherapists, GPs or other healthcare professionals if they wish to share helpful information.
