Trigger Finger / Trigger Thumb

Trigger Finger / Trigger Thumb

Trigger finger or trigger thumb causes clicking, locking, or catching when bending or straightening the affected finger or thumb. Some people notice pain at the base of the digit, and in more severe cases the finger may temporarily lock in a bent position before releasing. This can make everyday tasks such as gripping, writing, or using a phone uncomfortable and frustrating.

Understanding Trigger Finger and Trigger Thumb

This condition occurs when the flexor tendon thickens or the surrounding pulley (the A1 pulley) becomes inflamed, preventing smooth tendon movement. Over time, this can lead to pain, catching, and difficulty using the finger or thumb normally.

Assessment at The London Ultrasound Clinic

Your appointment includes a hands-on assessment of finger movement and a high-resolution ultrasound scan. This allows us to examine the flexor tendon and A1 pulley, confirming where thickening or inflammation is causing the tendon to catch as it moves.

Conservative Management

In milder cases, symptoms may improve with simple measures, which are usually the first step in treatment:

  • Activity modification and rest to reduce strain on the tendon
  • Guided exercises to improve tendon gliding and finger movement
  • Education and reassurance about the condition and expected recovery

These approaches often reduce symptoms and may prevent the need for injections.

Ultrasound-Guided Injection

If symptoms persist or locking becomes more frequent, an ultrasound-guided injection using steroid and local anaesthetic can be highly effective. The injection is placed precisely around the pulley to reduce inflammation, allowing the tendon to glide smoothly again. Many patients notice a significant reduction in pain and locking over the following days to weeks.

Recovery and Ongoing Care

After treatment, we provide clear guidance on finger use, exercises, and activity pacing to support recovery and reduce the chance of recurrence. Most patients regain smooth, comfortable finger movement and are able to return to normal hand function quickly.

Our aim is to provide a clear diagnosis, effective treatment, and reassurance, helping you restore comfortable movement and confidence in your hand.
