Shoulder Impingement
Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons or bursa are compressed during arm movement, causing pain and discomfort. At The London Ultrasound Clinic, we often see patients who describe a painful arc when lifting the arm, a sharp pinch overhead, or discomfort when reaching behind the back. The rotator cuff tendons and subacromial bursa are commonly involved, and over time this irritation can make everyday tasks surprisingly challenging.
Impingement can develop due to posture, muscle imbalance, tendon thickening, bursitis, or minor structural changes around the shoulder. Many patients also notice disrupted sleep, particularly when lying on the affected side.
Conservative Management
Many patients benefit from non-invasive treatments, including:
- Targeted rehabilitation exercises to improve posture, strengthen muscles, and restore normal movement patterns
- Activity modification and load management to reduce strain on the shoulder
- Pain relief or anti-inflammatory medication where appropriate
- Education and reassurance about the condition and expected recovery
These approaches often help relieve pain, restore function, and prevent flare-ups.
Ultrasound-Guided Injections
When symptoms persist despite conservative care, an ultrasound-guided steroid injection can provide effective relief. Using local anaesthetic and steroid, the injection is delivered precisely around the affected tendons or bursa to reduce inflammation and ease pain. This can improve comfort during movement and support more effective rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation and Recovery
Following an injection or conservative treatment, structured exercises and guidance on safe shoulder movement are essential. Most patients notice gradual improvement in pain and function over the following days and weeks.
Our aim is to provide clear answers, effective treatment, and a supportive experience, helping you regain shoulder comfort, improve movement, and return to daily activities with confidence.
